Summer Road Trip with Low Back Pain? YIKES!

by | Jul 15, 2024

A long drive on a summer vacation can be a challenge if you’re suffering with low back pain. Here are some tips to make the journey a little easier.

These suggestions can also be adapted to plane or train travel – any trip with long periods of sitting:

  1. Let someone else load the vehicle and handle the bags and other heavy items.

  2. Consider wearing a low back support belt.

  3. Sometimes a small cushion behind the lower back is helpful when seated.

  4. Depending on how much pain you are in, stop every 30 – 60 minutes and simply walk for one minute. This will interrupt the prolonged sitting which typically aggravates low back pain. Please make your stops at a gas station, convenience store or other facility where there is designated parking, not on the side of the road which simply isn’t safe.

These actions may not eliminate the pain and discomfort completely, but should help reduce it.

Safe travels!
